The south

I wrote this post a while ago, but I feel it still bears saying.

The Georgia devision of The Sons of Confederate Veterans is running an ad saying: “All we wanted was to be left alone to govern ourselves."  I've used this space before to discuss what "governing themselves" looked like, but this is worth mentioning again. The "we" was, as a matter of law, the white folk, but the "ourselves" that was governed was, as a matter of law, the white and the black folk.  Sort of, since its hard to call slavery governance.  To glorify the succession of the south is by necessity to glorify a war started to defend the right to hold slaves, and to defend their cause is to defend slavery.  It is, with only the lightest layer of polish, a defense of racism.

The NY Times brings us this gem and more.
